Summer time in the White Mountains is spectacular. There are endless outdoor adventures to be had. There are hundreds of hiking trails here and many right around the corner from the hostel. Whether you’re looking to tackle Mt Washington or the whole Presidential Mountain Range or you’re looking for a shorter, smaller hike it is all right here at your boot tips.
The Moat Mountains are just around the corner from the Hostel, you can just hike up South Moat and back again from the trailhead on Passaconaway Rd or keep going and do the whole range. Another great hike close by is Mt Chocorua, the trail head is just a few miles south on Rt 16 from the Hostel. The Scenic Kancamagus Highway (Rt 112) starts just around the corner from the hostel. As you turn onto it the Saco Ranger Station is on the right. There you will find very knowledgable and helpful rangers and many many maps! They can send you on many hikes and walks off of the Kanc.
For you rock climbers out there, the White Mountains has a lot to offer. Cathedral Ledge is only 5 minutes from the hostel! It’s a sweet spot for Trad Climbing and has a wide range of climbing levels. This site has a helpful List of Classic Climbs in The White Mountains with descriptions. There are climbing classes and guides here in town as well. International Mountain Equipment (IME) is a great store right in North Conway Village and has all the climbing gear you could need, they also have International Mountain Climbing School. Their guides and classes are great for all ages and levels. Cathedral Mountain Guides is another great option for climbing guides and classes in the area. Adventure Spirit is a great company that offers climbing adventures with great guides who often stay at the White Mountains Hostel with their groups. Eastern Mountain Sports (EMS) is another store and climbing school option in town.
If Golf is your sport, summer is the time to go and we have many options near the hostel. Just around the corner from the hostel off of West Side Rd you’ll find Hales Location Golf Course. It is a beautiful setting and you can gaze up at Cathedral Ledge as you make your way around the course. The North Conway Country Club has a golf course right in the heart of the village and is only a 5 minute drive from the hostel. Enjoy a beautiful mountainous backdrop as you play these 18 holes. About 20 minutes north of the hostel in the quint Jackson Village you will find the Wentworth Golf Club. It’s a great course surrounded by quintessential New England small town charm not the least of which being covered bridges.
Mountain biking in the White Mountains is a great activity in Summer. It’s cool and shady in the woods and we have endless trail systems for singletrack from beginner to intermediate levels to keep you having fun! If you’re a hardcore mountain biker we would recommend heading about 15 minutes north of the hostel to Attitash Mountain Resort. There are over 20 trails to choose from and they are difficult to advanced in nature. You have access to the chairlift and you can spend he day ripping it up. If you’re not as advanced of a mountain biker and would rather an intermediate option there is a great system of trails just 10 mins from the hostel off of Rt 16 on Thompson Rd behind the Settlers Green outlet shopping center called Pudding Pond Area. There are 20 miles of trails there including the Sticks and Stones Trail the singletrack system it started with. It’s a great place if you want to stay on flat fast trails or head up a great assent to fly back down again. Now if you’re just getting into this sport snd want to try some beginner trails, you can head north to Jackson about 45 minutes from the hostel to the Great Glen Trails. There you will find a nice and easy trail system to get used to being on your mountain bike, it’s also a great place for kids and families to enjoy this sport together.
If you couldn’t bring your own bike you’re still in luck with some great places to rent mountain bikes in the area. Bob and Terry’s sport shop rents mountain bikes and hybrid bikes for $25/day, or $20/half day, or $8/hour. Stan and Dan Sports shop also rents mountain bikes. And Red Jersey Cyclery rents mountain bikes and road bikes, they also offer repair and maintenance services. All three of these great small businesses are located right in North Conway just a few minutes from the hostel.
If you’re a road bike enthusiast or cyclist rather, you are also in luck here in this beautiful area! Road biking or cycling can be done right from the hostel. We can send you on some great loops in the area. They will all deliver great hills and phenomenal views no matter what direction you head in! (NEED MILEAGE for these three loops!) There’s the Westside Rd to North South road which will take you on a beautiful country road where you’ll pass farms and horses and see beautiful Cathedral Ledge and White horse right from your saddle. North South road will then take you behind all of the North Conway village and outlets then back to the Hostel. Another great loop is the Kanc, to Passaconway road to Westside road. This will take you along the river for most of the ride, with beautiful sites of rushing water and coniferous trees surrounding you and their smell is lovely. If you’re feeling ambitious the loop to take your road bike on is up the Kanc and over Bear Notch road and back down 302 to Upper Westside road and back to the hostel. The Kanc is beautiful and goes along the river then going over Bear Notch Rd, (which is closed in winter!) is a feast for your eyes, especially in Fall. You will look North to the mountains in Crawford Notch, there are a few pull off spots to rest and gaze at the view. When you turn off of Bear Notch you will be in the quaint little town of Bartlett, if you need a break and some refreshments stop at Bart’s Deli and General Store. They make delicious sandwiches and you can refuel on electrolytes while you’re at it!
Summer time is the perfect time to get out into or onto the water in the White Mountains. We have some great rivers near the hostel you can get out on and have some fun. White water kayaking is an exciting summer sport and we have many different routes around us. The Saco River from North Conway to Conway is a great white water route and offers a class I water experience. If you’re looking for class III-IV try head 20 minutes north of the hostel to upper Saco River from Crawford Notch to Bartlett. The Swift River is on many white water kayakers lists of favorite rivers and it’s just around the corner from the hostel. It offers class I-IV waters, so Swift River from Bear Notch Road to The Kancamagus Highway is not to be missed in Spring. If you don’t have your own kayak or canoe there are options very close to the hostel for rentals, they also shuttle you to and from the river with the boat! Northern Extremes Canoe and Kayak is very close to the hostel and they offer shuttle service to the Saco River. Another option is Saco Canoe Rental Company, they are just around the corner from the hostel and also offer shuttle service for canoes and kayaks for trips on the Saco River. These places also rent river tubes if you just feel like floating down the river for the day in the sunshine, a great way to spend a summer day in The White Mountains!
If being high off the ground on a ropes course is what your looking for for outdoor adventure then we have a couple of options near the hostel! Monkey Trunks is just a few miles south of the hostel on Rt. 16 and offers high and low ropes course experiences and a zip line sending you right through the forest for that flying through a jungle feeling you’re looking for! Just a few miles north of the hostel at Cranmore Mountain Adventure Park you will find Aerial Adventure Park with a forest ropes course that offers different sections for ability levels. It’s sure to be fun for the whole family!
If nothing else, summer is the time of year to swim!! We have lakes, ponds and rivers to choose from to cool off on a hot day after a fun adventure, or you can just spend the whole day at the beach or on the river! Just 5 minutes from the hostel is Echo Lake State Park. A beautiful lake you can either sit at the beach and swim, take out a canoe or walk the wooded path all the way around the lake while you look up at Cathedral Ledge. Just a little further on West Side Rd you will find Diana’s Baths Waterfalls, a great walk for the whole family ending at beautiful waterfalls and an area great for swimming and a picnic in the woods. Just a few miles south of the hostel on Rt. 16 in the little town of Chocorua you will find Chocoura Lake, it’s a great place to swim but be sure to park on the public parking section, the other section is for town residents only. There you can swim, fish, take out a boat and you will be looking up at beautiful Mount Chocorua, it’s a spectacular spot.
Summer is a fun time to hit the shops, outlets and sales. They are all only a 5-10 minute drive from the hostel. Settlers’ Green has a vast variety of shops from home goods to hip clothing to children’s clothing and gadgets. They also have a great Italian Restaurant Brandli’s Pizza Pasta Grill, with a lovely outdoor patio if you’re feeling like dining alfresco. Don’t miss the quaint shopping experience up in North Conway Village. There are cute little shops, cafés and local restaurants. The classic general store experience can be gained at Zeb’s with local gifts, and unique souvenirs, it’s not to be missed! Another classic throwback experience can be gained at The North Conway 5 & 10 Store with all the little goodies you want and need from kitchen gadgets to penny candy and fudge!
